The DofE challenges young people aimed at 14-24 year olds to achieve standards in a range of interests, including expeditions, volunteering, physical activities, and skills. These challenges can take young people out of their comfort zones by overcoming obstacles and improving self-esteem, helping them build confidence and resilience which creates a sense of adventure. The physical activity element of DofE can help develop both the body and mind and there is a sense of achievement on completion.
- The DofE helps young people learn and develop skills that they might not normally learn in school, such as communication, teamwork, and problem solving. These skills can help young people become more rounded adults, and can also be attractive to colleges, universities, and employers.
- Make friends. The DofE can help young people meet new people and make lasting friendships and develop serving the community.
- Have fun. The DofE can be fun and provide amazing new experiences, camping, cooking, learning how to make decisions.
- Stand out. The DofE can help young people stand out from the crowd in college, university, and job applications.
The DofE is non-competitive, voluntary, and developmental, and participants can design their own programs to suit their interests and circumstances. The DofE has four sections: volunteering, physical, skills, and expedition and students can tailor the award according to their interests and hobbies.
