Mindful Tree Observations: Enhancing Student Wellbeing Through Nature

Our outdoor lesson today combined both biology and mental wellbeing.
Observing trees can offer a cross curriculum activity, it can be a powerful mental health exercise, fostering mindfulness, relaxation and a deeper connection with nature whilst studying science.

We located a tree in Malvern Park, the one in the picture was chosen because of its shape, size and interesting characteristics. We then looked at recording our observations of the tree such as the patterns of the bark, texture, colour and any others markings such as moss or fungi. We then discussed the arrangement of the branches and leaves, how they grow, transport systems and discussed the overall structure and how it relates to the surrounding landscape.

Being outdoors offers students a chance to engage all their senses, through touch, the feel of the texture of the bark, the sounds of the leaves and sight, looking for wildlife associated with the tree. The lesson finished with a reflection exercise on the tree’s role in the ecosystem and its interconnections with other plants and animals.
